Autumn Colors from Höflein to Vienna

Motiv

I'm planning to head out for a long and easy trail run in the vicinity of Vienna. The weather forecast isn't particularly optimistic, but it currently looks like most of the day should remain dry, in the air at least.

The route leads through beautiful forested sections with single track and gravel roads alternating. I've run this route several times, and navigation is straightforward.

If we are lucky with the conditions, and feeling adventurous enough, we might even experience the nearest gorge to Vienna!

Who is this for? -- Both road and trail runners with sufficient endurance to comfortably manage 25 km in one go (with occasional breaks, of course), and, most importantly, the mindset to enjoy a few hours out in nature.

Equipment? -- Trail shoes, suitable gear/clothing, liquids, nutrition etc. for full self-sufficiency are mandatory.

Pace? -- Expect a steady, no-pressure trail pace, often conversational, with moderate vertical gain. This is about enjoying the run, not chasing a time.

Getting there: S40 train from Vienna; take Bus 400 from Heiligenstadt at 8:30, get off at Klosterneuburg-Kierling at 8:47, take S40 departing at 8:51, get off in Höflein at 8:59 (due to construction the S40 only starts at Nußdorf)

  • LONG: ~30 km / ~900 m+ to Heilingestadt train / U4 station
